Eyeing up CachyOS

On my old Dell XPS I've currently got Bazzite running on it. This has been running pretty well, especially considering it is now almost a decade old. However, even though it does have a dedicated mobile graphics card it is unsurprisingly old and therefore not really up to gaming, even particularly older stuff. So I often feel like Bazzite is a bit overkill for this laptop. I did wonder whether shifting to Universal Blue's (the group behind Bazzite) other KDE based distro Aurora?

I did use it for a bit on my old Surface Go, but that device is just not powerful enough for it. Sure, it ran ok (still better than Windows 10 had become) but Zorin is a much better fit on that device. However, for a device that I'm happy to tinker with, I'm starting to find the immutable aspect of it to get in the way. Yes I can do some bits and pieces via the terminal on it, but feels antithetical to the ethos of this style of OS. The Steam Deck also used an immutable approach (even on Arch) and that makes a lot of sense there. If Zorin was immutable that would be a good fit for how I would use that device. But for my Dell, given its size as well I'm happy to use it more like a desktop.

As a result, I've been eying up CachyOS. Not full Arch - I don't really have the desire to go that deep - but I have seen various posts about how Cachy is particularly good on older hardware. Plus I would get most of the benefits of Arch.

At the moment I've been watching videos during breaks from writing, but once I have a bit of free time again I might try and experiment.
