Governments do not understand the internet
As part of its misguided "Online safety act" in the UK the Government is now forcing internet based services to add additional changes in order to verify a user is who they say they are. In practice though, this is so far just to verify age.
The first notable victim is Bluesky which is now asking UK users to use an external verification system to confirm who they are by checking it against some form of identification.
For many users this will just be an annoyance. For some though it could risk exposing their information. If the Government really wanted to do this properly, they are readily have the gov.uk system set up which is actually good at verifying who you are. Why does a third party system needed?
What the Government also continues to misunderstand (either main party is equally inept here) is that these measures can be easily bypassed. VPNs exist and with one click of a button, suddenly I'm in France, using Bluesky on my phone like I was before. This though is not an ideal situation, as it is still a cost for UK internet users to use the internet freely. Free VPNs do exist, some are dangerous as they will just leak your information, which the Government would have pushed people into this situation. Thankfully however, there are some good free ones. The main one would be Proton VPN, as with an account you get a basic VPN for free. You can't stream video with it, but for the purpose of bypassing misguided Government barriers, it is perfect for this; it's also the very reason why Proton has made the basic version free.
This post is just a general take on the situation. If you want more information, I encourage you to read further. This is just to make you aware of it.
