Still playing Skate Story

On Monday a week after the game launched, Skate Story received its first patch, and for me this was the one needed to fix the issues I was having with it on the PS5 Pro. Now the game is running exactly as it should on the system. Rather than having to play a slightly downgraded version via streaming.

As a game this is exactly the kind of thing that I want. Competent gameplay with a really interesting vibe. The skating in the game is thankfully solid. This isn't Tony Hawks, nor it is really Skate (although it has more in common in terms of skating to the latter). Skating might be a big part of the game, but it's also in practice an adventure game. Each area usually has some task that the skater (made of glass and pain) needs to complete, accompanied by his rabbit companion. The tasks themselves are a mix of fetch quests or "battles" which require you to do tricks that magically cause damage.

This sounds bizarre, and it is, but it never feels out of place. The characters you meet along the way seem randomly placed yet also just adds to the weird yet comforting vibe that is going on. At one point you are helping a pigeon that is trying to work on their novel in a coffee shop.

Describing parts of the game out of context would make you sound like you are having some kind of trip. Sam Eng, the games creator, said he wanted to make a vaporwave style game, and along with the excellent soundtrack from Blood Cultures he has definitely achieved this.

I'm pass the half way point now and don't want the game to end. Although conversely, I know the game has around 7 or 8 levels which is also a good thing. This should mean that the game doesn't outstay its welcome, which is something indie games are typically far better at. Much rather finish a game wanting more than waiting for it to be other.

Even if you aren't keen on skateboarding still consider giving this a go if anything in the trailers look appealing to you.
